Hey, Soul Sister: Most Downloaded Song in 2010

Maybe it's not the best song of all time. However, this song is the American overall best selling song in 2010, iTunes best-selling single of 2010, #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and Columbia Records' most downloaded song of all time. The song, which was a lead single for Train's Save Me San Francisco album and was written by Patrick Monahan, Amund Bjorklund and Espen Lind, is placed at 8th place for the most digitally downloaded song ever with 4.8 million copies sold in the US alone. It also received a quadruple platinum certification by the RIAA.

In my opinion, what makes the song attractive is the background music with the unique high-pitch acoustic touch of ukulele (Hawaiian traditional guitar.) It makes the song distinctive among today's songs which mostly depend on modern amplifier and countless sound effects. What I like the most from this song is its video clip. The video took place around the corner of Morton Ave and Echo Park Ave in Los Angeles, California. I just love the simple suburban ambience as well as the thorough way the "black inks" crawl along the background through a stop-motion style. It's just briliance.

Okay, I know the description is less important than the clip itself that some of you aren't even read it at all. So have a look and enjoy!

WikiLeaks

Recently, WikiLeaks – not related to Wikipedia – has become a hot topic internationally as they decided to publicize highly classified documents and videos. WikiLeaks describes itself as "an uncensorable system for untraceable mass document leaking". The main objective of this organization is claimed to be a medium in which government and corporate misconducts are revealed. The organization claims that it had received more than 1.2 million diplomatic cables and top secret documents, especially of those which related to the U.S. government.

The website of this non-profit organization was launched in 2006. The founder, Julian Assange, has numerous experiences in the internet technology, including being charged by hacking the computers of an Australian telecom. As an Australian-born, he studied physics and mathematics at the University of Melbourne. The latest news reported that Assange has been arrested in London for accusation on raping and molestation on two Swedish women. The interesting part here is, one of the woman was suspected to had a connection with the CIA.

With TED's Chris Anderson, Assange talked about how the site operates, what it has accomplished, and what drives him. The interview includes graphic footage of a recent US airstrike in Baghdad.

In 2009, Amnesty International recognized Assenge with an International Media Award for the publication of a report titled “Kenya: The Cry of Blood – Extra Judicial Killings and Disappearances”. In April 2010, the most shocking video was published, where the U.S. armies killed 12 Iraqis, including two journalists. Its most recent publicity was the gradual publicity on U.S diplomatic cables.

Some government authorities have started to build a countermeasure. In most countries, the public can no longer has access to the U.S. embassy’s secret documents through the website. Also, students at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs were prohibited to post links, to discuss, or even to give comments on WikiLeaks documents on their Facebook or Twitter accounts as by doing so would threaten their employment possibility.

In November 2010, Assange told Swiss public television TSR that he was considering to seek political asylum in Switzerland and setting up a WikiLeaks foundation in the country to move the operation there. According to him, Switzerland and Iceland are the only countries where WikiLeaks would feel safe to operate.

Following continuous U.S. diplomatic cables leak by the end of November 2010, several companies severed ties with WikiLeaks, including EveryDNS and Amazon.com that claimed the severance was due to DDoS attacks and was not initiated by the U.S. authorities.

CNN television network reported that, after being ousted by Amazon servers, WikiLeaks is now residing in a new location in Sweden. This “whistle-blower” site is now using the biggest provider in Sweden, Bahnhof, which is headquartered in a 30-meters underground bunker. The bunker, which was used as a war station during the Cold War, is approachable from Sweden capital, Stockholm. The same bunker is used as a center for WikiLeaks data and secret files.

Financially-obsessed

A bitter fact struck into my mind that studying Finance have been ruining my life! My day-to-day activities are haunted by inappropriate financial terms. They're filling my brain, giving no space for anything else, swelling it to be crumbled in a near future. My friends implied that they couldn't even comprehend the words I utter. If I knew that it would be like this, I'd rather chose to be a soldier, so that I could slaughter all the people involved in financial realm.

Hence, for anyone who have intention to study Finance... DON'T!!!

These are ten ways of how it has been disrupting my life.

1. Movie
Flat mate: Have you watched new James Bond? It's so cool!
Me: Junk bond? Why would I watch a low-rated bond? And what's so cool about it? Losing money?

2. Coffee shop
Waitress: Hi. What would you like to order?
Me: Yes. Can I have a plain vanilla rates swap please?

3. Reading magazine
Proverb in the mag: "The past is full of memories. The future is full of mysteries."
Me: Hmmm.... But my lecturer said that the rate of a futures contract locks the asset value. Then it shouldn't be a mystery anymore. I wonder which one is correct.

4. Justin BieberMe: Hi, how are you?
Girl I like (on her iPod): Good.
Me: What song is you listening?
Girl I like: Justin Bieber's Baby.
Me: Just-in-what? Is that anything to do with Just-in-Time inventory management?
Girl I like: Meh!

5. GardenMy mom: I want you to make a perfect hedge here.
Gardener: But it would be very costly, ma'am!
Me: It's impossible! There's no such thing as a perfect hedge! Every hedge would still bear some risks.

6. Basketball tournament
Student 1: They won the cup!
Student 2: Yeah! I give credit to the coach. He'd trained them so hard.
Me: For how much interest rates?Student 2: No, man. I mean compliment. Nothing to do with a loan!

7. Apology
Friend: I'm so sorry, I lied to you.
His girfriend: How could you do that to me?
Friend: I had no option!
Me: You need an option? I know where you can buy it with a cheap premium. It's better than trading forward contract, though.
Friend: F*** off!

8. Buying shoe
Me: Is this shoe made of real leather?
Shoe-seller: No, all of our products are synthetics, but they're more durable. So, financially it's better than buying the real one.
Me: Synthetic financial product, eh?
Shoe-seller: Erm... sorry?

9. Big-Bang Theory
Cousin: Do you know that the universe grows in size from time to time? But the inflation rate is still a mystery.
Me: Inflation rate is measurable! Moreover, it's not global. Each country's rate depends on the economy.
Cousin: ... whatever!

10. Taroonga ZooSister: Let's look for a Kiwi. Kiwis are endangered nowadays, and they're could only found in New Zealand.
Me: You bet it is! It's a New Zealand dollar-US dollar pair, for Kiwi's sake! But why did you say they're endangered? Their economy is quite stable.
Sister: D'oh! I'm talking about the real Kiwi! You know, the small brown flightless bird with long, thin beak!?

PS: It's just for fun! Anyway, I like studying Finance ;-)

Falling in Love

In a living room, there were two men having a conversation. One of the man was sharing about his feeling upon a girl he liked. The host's younger brother, still a kid, walked by and unintentionally heard the conversation in which he was hardly understand.

The time passed by, and his friend went home. His little brother, came out of nowhere, approached him and asked, "Brother, what does "falling in love" mean?" Momentarily shocked, he smiled upon his brother and answered it in a calmest way he could, "Hmmm.... a man once said that "falling in love" is when someone initially enter into the heaven, but gradually fell into the hell."

His brother frowned and confused even more. "What does that supposed to mean?" he asked further. "Well, someday you would understand, when you have a strange feeling toward a girl... and her image flickering in your mind... and you dream nobody but her... and you miss her when she's out of your sight... and you wish that she will always by your side... and you would do anything to make her smiles... and you're angry when she talks with other guys... and your heart crumbles when she betrays you," he explained, and continued, "Its nature is illogical, but rather psychological. But not to worry, my little brother, it's just the matter of time before you find it out by yourself."

Exploring Melbourne City

So that was a week before when I and my sister vacate to Melbourne as we decided to spent the winter holiday by travelling outside Sydney. It was quite a cloudy morning when we took off from Sydney Airport. Perfect. Then "see you again, Sydney!"

About one-and-a-half hours spending time in the plane, we safely arrived at Melbourne Airport. Hmmm... Melbourne's weather was a little bit colder than Sydney. Arriving at Southern Cross Station, we checked-in to nearby hotel at Spencer St, and then went sight-seeing along the well-known Yarra River.

Aesthetical river in my opinion. I was suddenly feeling as if I hopped into a romantic movie. Well, the water was claimed polluted and the colour was as brown as a clay by its nature, but I cared none on the fact. Seeing the classic buildings across Southernbank Promenade, it reminded me of London's Thames River. The river was full of boats, water taxis and canoes. By its sides, the river was tidily adorned with beautiful parks, cafes and edifices. And above it, highways and bridges were straddled over the line. People were jogging, riding bicycle, dating, and sight-seeing just like us. We spent some times there without realizing that the sun was setting.

The night beautified the river even more. I was really fond of looking to the nearby edifices' shadows on the river surface. Blurry but schematic. In my mind, I wished that someday I could buy a condo by it's side so that I could enjoy the mind-calming scena every morning and everynight.

After a lot of walking, we saw a shocking scene just across the river. A series of blasting fire! Then we found the sources. Still besides the river, there were these chimneys, neatly disguised as decorating pillars along the rivers. The fact was then revealed that the fire displays were showed hourly every nights during the winter. Approaching one of the chimney, we could hear gas blowed up from it. We didn't realize that we were so close to it that we jolted in fear when the fire burst suddenly with shocking sound. The heat of the fire even slapped our faces!

Then unexpectedly, in the middle of the ten-minutes display, I saw a seagull flew between the chimneys. I kinda wished that the seagull would be auto-roasted by it's stupidity and fell straight to the nearest cafe's plate to be freshly-served, hahaha... hehe... ehm, anyway, we called that a day to prepare for the next exploration.

Second day

That day, we went to the Old Melbourne Gaol. The three-storey building was built in the mid of 1800s, and there is only one block left as a tourist attraction up until now. Again, it felt like in a movie, with stone walls and medieval ambience. Even in the afternoon, the gaol was damp and spooky. Most of the cells contained profile and story of their former occupants. Once, I tried to peek into a closed cell through a peeking hole, and was half-expecting that someone would jump from inside, but I saw nothing except a mat and

It was so miserable to think that human-beings were forced to live in such dark, restricted rooms.

The gaol was complete with execution gallow and other punishment tools. There was also rooms with television for explanation of historical crimes and stories.

Have you ever heard about Ned Kelly before? If you haven't, you're not alone. I hadn't heard about him neither, at least until I came here. Anyway, he was the most legendary criminal in Australia, and he -- along with his gangs -- was imprisoned and executed in this gaol.

Third day

That day was so special to the extend that that day's exploration would be one of the most memorable exploration in my life. Simply saying, I entered into a time machine and went back to the past!

Me and my sister had visited the 1800s gaol, but that day we went straight to the 1800s small village and interact with the citizens. Sovereign Hill was what the place called. It was resided in the city of Ballarat -- about one-and-a-half hours by train from Melbourne -- and was famous for the discovery of gold in 1851.

Arriving at the hill right before midday, we went through the entrance and turn left to went down the steps to some dark chamber as we watched mannequins, backgrounds and even documentary movie which were telling the day-by-day activities of the villagers in 1800s.

Escaping from the chamber, we walked by the creek up to the water source, seeing people panning for real gold, at least if they were lucky enough to find one. After that, we joined a group of visitors in a ten-minute, self-guided underground adventure tour of the Red Hill Mine. The corridor was very dark and restrained, and I was the last person in the group, making sure there was no one, or thing, behind me. The tour depicted the discovery of the 69 kg Welcome Nugget, which was claimed as the second largest gold nugget ever found.

Back to the free world, we entered this building with three old-ladies knitting and painting in a very 1800s room. It really looked like an old portrait. Classic. By the way, they were very hospitable Australian ladies.

Suddenly we heard some noises just outside the building, and we decided to find the source. A group of urban militaries were marching down the street, with their red-and-black uniforms and real guns. Outstanding.

After that, we watched a gold-pouring demonstration. Five minutes of the process explanation, the blacksmith poured a yellowish, melted gold into a bullion bar, and the cameras were eagerly catching the incredible scene. Two-three minutes were gone and he put the gold into a container of water. The process produced a hiss as the hot gold reacted to the cold water. As the gold calmed down, he picked it and called a teenage girl to show it to the audience. It was a $80,000-worth pure gold, so he grabbed it suddenly from the girl's hands as if he was too afraid to allow other person to hold it too long.

The rest of the day we spent by playing some traditional bowling, watching a teaching-process in an elementary school, witnessing some classic photography process, wandering in some assimilated 1800s houses, and exploring gold museum.

By 4 PM, we were already in a train bringing our exhausted bodies back to Southern Cross Station, Melbourne.

Fourth Day

That day was our last day in Melbourne. We spent the time by visiting Melbourne University and St Kilda Beach.

After spending about 2-3 hours at the beach, we went back to our hotel to check-out and rushed to Melbourne Airport.

By 8 PM, we said bye-bye to Melbourne.

Technology of Antimatter

Do you have any idea of what antimatter is? Or, have you even heard of it before? Let me give a hint: it had been mentioned several times in Hollywood movies, such as Star Trek series, or a more recent Angels and Demons (actually, the novel with the same title written by Dan Brown was the one introduced me to antimatter.) If you still out of clue, this posting, which is devoted to briefly explain about antimatter, will [hopefully] help you to understand it.

Introduction
Antimatter is a matter consisting of elementary anti-particles, which have contradictory characteristic with particles. Put it simple, antimatter is the negative side of what we generally know as matter. Philosophically, antimatter is what balances the existence of matter. If a matter is +1, then antimatter is -1, and thus +1 - 1 = 0. To make it less vague, everything that our senses can detect is made of matters: air, water, stone, soil, everything!

The Discovery
The concept of antimatter was stimulated by Paul Dirac in 1927, when he developed a relativistic equation for the electron, known as the Dirac equation. But the real concept of antimatter was confirmed experimentally by Carl D. Anderson in 1932.

In 1995, European Council for the Nuclear Research (Conseil European pour la Reserche Nucleare - CERN) which is headquartered in Switzerland, claimed that they had successfully made a first particle of antimatter in the world.

Characteristic
Antimatter is the strongest energy source has ever known by human. It can produce energy with 100% efficiency, compared to just 1.5% efficiency of nuclear reaction. This means, antimatter produces no remnant, unlike nuclear which will leave a big amount of radiation. A single droplet of antimatter can produce a 24 hours electrical power for New York City. A gram of antimatter contains the explosive power of a ten kiloton nuclear bomb, the same as a bomb put Hiroshima to the ground.

Antimatter is not without any weakness. There is a fatal weakness of antimatter. It is extremely unstable and flammable. It will explode and annihilate everything within the range when it comes in contact with any matter, even with air.

Antimatter is said to be the most expensive substance in existence, with an estimated cost of US $300 billion per milligram. This is because the production is very complicated and time-consuming.

Production
Antimatter is being produced at CERN laboratory by using Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which is claimed as the biggest machine in the world with its 8-miles-thick and 27-miles-long circular tunnel. In LHC, two types of particles are accelerated so fast that they reach 180,000 mile in a second (almost close to the light velocity.

Preservation
For its extremely unstable nature, to preserve it, an antimatter trap is used. In the trap, antimatter is suspended in a magnetic field to avoid contact with any matter. These applied forces suspend the antimatter in the middle of the vacuumed container, usually a tube.

The answers from the research conducted on antimatter result on another questions, especially of its position in this universe. Based on basic principles of symmetry, it was believed that the universe consist of both matter and antimatter in equal amounts. If it was true, where in the universe were those antimatters hidden? Some say Black Hole is one of its center, while other say Bermuda Triangle is one of its spot.

Love of the Dove

A short story by Faris

Once upon a time, there were a pair of young dove who were so deep in love. A white male and a white female. They spent times together, wherever they were.

One day, the male, so eager with his power of love, took along his beloved one flying to the highest branch of the highest three in the neighborhood. The view was magnificent up there, triggering their imagination of being the king and the queen of the world. And so, the female laid her head to the male's side. They spent half day together in the branch.

Then that nightmare happened.

A grey male dove, bigger and stronger than the white male, was flying overhead. Without warning, he dove swiftly and landed perfectly to the tip of the branch where the pair were. That was just the way a male dove attract a female. Obviously, the white female was impressed by his agility. So did the grey male. He was so astonished by the beauty of the female dove. Perfect white. The most beautiful dove he had ever seen. Thus the female sold her shy glance. With full confidence, the grey male tried to approace the female. However, the white male flew forward and suddenly a fight was inevitable....

In a glance, the gray male evaded while fluttering his wings to the white male. He then flew back to his opponent with stronger fluttering and wide-spread claws, easily hit his opponent. The fight was going on in a nick of time. The white was struck hard at his head. Instantaneously, he stumbled and fell down, hitting some branches and broke his left wing along the way. Falling hard to the ground, he saw the female flew away with her new lover.

The pain was tremendously unbearable, brought him to the verge of death. Blood covered his head and body. His body was numb, and his head was aching. All of the pains, and he almost didn't feel them at all. There was a more severe pain, much more hurting than the bodily injuries, yet he hardly knew where the pain was. His heart. Yeah, his heart was so much in misery, as if half of his heart was ripped away by the female dove. Remembering her, he couldn't imagine that he would want to live for any longer, and that thought was intensified by his serious injuries.

How ironic a life could be. The higher he flew, the more beautiful the view, but the more painful if he fell down. And so he started to moan, crying out loud with his broken voice. The longer, the louder he cried.

Not far away, a brown female dove heard a suffering cry from somewhere. Pity and curiosity motivated her gentle heart, and therefore she flew to find the source. And the dawn was coming.

***

The next morning, the male dove gained back his consciousness. What warmth was covering his body, he wondered. Then a flutter of wings was heard approaching. His blurry eyes catched a shape of shadow with blinding background. Was that an angel?Thank God, he thought. He was so sick of life. Unfortunately, as his vision got clearer, he missed his strong will of death. He saw a brown female dove, approaching him slowly, with leaves in her beak. Then she put the leaves on the male's body. Ah, leaves. That what made him warmth. Not far from him, some oats was gathered. He was bewildered by her attitude. What did she want? And thus he looked away.

His body was feeling better. He wanted to get up in no time, so he tried to gain up the strength to stand, but he failed. His body was still too weak and painful. He kept away his eyes from the female. All females were just the same, he bitterly thought. The time went by, and the night took over the day.

***

The following day, he woke up just to find that the female was still taking care of him. Again, she gathered oats for the male.

Day by day was passing by. The male, unaware of his feeling, was starting to admire the sincerity of the female. He had been ignoring her since the first day they met, but she never showed even slightiest regret for taking care of him. She was a female that was physically simple, not so attractive for most of the male doves, but she was very caressing by nature, surprisingly even toward unfamiliar male dove.

***

The sun and the moon mutually swapped their shifty roles, and thanks to the female dove, the male dove's health was getting better in a quick pace. Nevertheless, his vitality was still not recovered fully. He still remembered the white female dove. Seeing him like that, the brown female hopped and flew around him. And without realized, his heart started to resonate the female's dance. He felt some strange warm feeling in his heart. Ah, he knew exactly what was that feeling. The feeling that he once cursed to death not long ago. And now, for the second time, that very same feeling was unstoppably penetrating his heart without remorse.
She was not beautiful, nor she was attractive, but she was special with a rarest sincere heart a dove could have. The inner-beauty that was claimed to exist only in a fairy-tale. Indeed, such beauty was far more calming than any other.
Then she started to flew farther, took a glance at the male as a sign to fly along with her. The male was hesitant at first, but his wings started flapping by themselves. And soon he found himself flying to catch the female's motion toward the future, without even had a thought to looking back at all.

Ever since then, with his new stronger spirit, the male dove flew along with his true love, forgetting the past, and building new tale of his life.

Learning and Earning by Doing

It has been two weeks since I decided to learn foreing exchange business to understand the realm deeper. By the fifteenth of April, I saw an advertisement in my Yahoo! Mail page. Curiousity took over my mind and I ended up signing in this account. I was half-hearted back then. I was afraid that it was a fraud to take my money. Yeah, cybercrime. Yet again, I believed Yahoo! wouldn't grant any untrusted source to make advertisement in their page.

Five minutes later, I still hadn't finish my deduction, but an international call came in to my phone. I was shocked, so I ignored it. I bet it was a call from the forex company. Then when it came in again about ten minutes later, I decided to pick it up. I was right! It was a call from the company. After half an hour of talking, I decided to have it a try. I deposited US$ 100 to my account, and the game was just began!

I was so excited, so I opened a position. After several minutes, I lost US$ 20. Perfect! However, I managed to gain US$ 41, made a a net profit of US$ 21. Wow.... A beginner's luck, maybe. Along the time, I've made profits and losses inconsistently. But that's the point of learning and earning by doing, isn't it?

Since then, I received at least two emails about strategy and economic information from them. It made me easier to know what was going on in the market and thus what position to be opened. And the best thing about that was they also conducted webinars -- a web-based seminars. I hadn't have any idea what was that about. And the tricky thing was I had to adjust AEDT (Australian Eastern Day Time) with GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), which was claimed +10 hours, but when I synchronized it with the forex platform, it was +9 hours. The schedule was 7PM GMT, which was 4AM AEDT. So if I followed the formal GMT, I would've been too late to join the first webinar. Well, it happened to one of the attendant.

They used Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro to perform the webinar, so the moderator interacted through audio-visual and chat mode. Moreover, he also could control slides and examples and showed them in the middle of the screen. It was very interactive. We only could comment or ask any question through chat mode, but that was more than enough to make any point. Before attending the webinar, I had never imagined that I could join a web-based seminar while the moderator was on the other side of the world and he responded to me directly. It was kinda funny because we used different mode -- I asked and commented through chat mode, while he responded audio-visually -- and yet, it was so unimaginable.

Now, I've already mastered the way to use platform, but I am still struggling to find out on how to read the trends of the market whether they are going to rise or fall. One of the main difference between speculating with foreign currency and stock is we could make money when the currency rise or fall, whereas in the stock, only some people could profit by the fall of the price (the method is known short-selling). I've been spending a lot of time in front of my laptop just to monitor my profits and losses, and it is becoming my habit. But so far, I've been enjoying it. I'm looking forward to master the way to read the trends and make some money through it.

Avatar: Welcome to Planet Pandora

Warning: This posting contains some details from the movie. For everyone who haven't watched it but love to enjoy the movie without anyone tell you the storyline beforehand, I suggest to pick the reading wisefully.
James Cameron is surely a master of break-the-record movies. He was the man behind "Titanic", the worldwide highest-grossing movie of all time, at least until the beginning of this year, before he broke another record through his recent masterpiece, "Avatar". Also, many movie criticists suspected that Avatar had the highest budget of all time. One movie with multiple records. Splendid!

For me, Avatar made my record too: watching the same movie three times in two weeks. Twice on my laptop, and once in 3-D IMAX Theatre. Why's that so special? Well, because usually I am too lazy to watch a movie after I watch it once. But there are just too many factors made me fond of watching this movie.

The other-worldly Planet Pandora was as far as 5 years of light from Planet Earth, which in this movie was succumbing into its destruction, thanks to humankind greed, indeed. 'Twas occupied by six-legged and four-winged creatures as well as glow-in-the-dark plants, and most importantly the blue-skin humanoid: the Na'vi. Na'vi was the human in its own world. Well, not real human, but at least humanoid. Its body was more evolved than human with bones reinforced with naturally occuring carbon fiber. I didn't really know what's the significance, but essentially its bones were seriously harder than human bones. Also, Na'vi had intelligence, speaks advanced language, granted control on its nature, and had complex culture. The cultural details were explained in quite thorough way: how they accepted newcomer, how they acknowledged one's maturity, how to behave as a good Na'vi, and also how they made bonds, i.e. Sa'helu, with horses and Ikrans.

Na'vi's goddess, Eywa, was another ethereal touch in the story. She was so real that Na'vi interacted with her almost directly, and more importantly, Her rule in a decisive battle with the bad side: human. Yeah, human. The fact that human was not always being the most righteous side was one of the most important thing that made this movie very special. Not like most of human-versus-alien movies, human was the main villain in this movie. As if that wasn't enough, human also took part with the good side, most notably, Jake Sully

Favorite moments

There's several moments I liked best, and I sort them based on my preference.

1. Jake implemented his hypothesis about the Toruk. Jake believed that because Toruk was the king of the air, it became too proud of itself and though that there was no reason to be afraid when it flew on the air. So he tried to prove it by jumping right on its back. Good job, Jake!

2. Jake fled away from furious hungry Pandoran tiger, Thanator. I loved the slow-motioned moments when he fought his way to lose the tiger, especially when he jumped off the cliff while the tiger tried to catch him right by the edge of the cliff.

3. Tsu'tey led three young Na'vis -- included Jake -- to find their Ikrans. They ran and climbed furiously through roots and jumped to another roots with the risk of losing their lifes. Classic.

4. "Seeds of the secret tree" covered Jake's body. Neytiri believed it was a sign from Eywa that Jake was special and thus decided to bring him to Moat.

5. Jake's survival game in the forest. The first time I watched this movie, I thought he would surely not make it through the night without any serious injury. He was surrounded by two dozens of dogs, for God's sake! Luckily, the "good Samaritan", I mean "good Pandoran" named Neytiri arrived to save the night.

Flaws

Despite its complex features, I always think that the movie could be done more than it had. Here are the things I considered as flaws in the movie.

1. Pandoran creature limbs. The fact that Planet Pandora had less gravitational force than earth made it rational for Na'vi's posture to be as twice as human, but it was slightly out-of-track for another creatures to have extra limbs for lower gravity than earth's. Luckily, Na'vi didn't have four legs.

2. Na'vi's language fluency. I love the way Neytiri spoke in English the first time she met Jake. "This is sad. Very sad, only," she said it with awkward pronunciation and structure. That's it. That's the first and last time she spoke like that. It was strange for me to hear Na'vis talk English very fluently, considering they only practiced it with Jake and Grace. She even spoke English more fluent than me, whom have learned English since elementary school. I would like to hear them speak stutteringly like: "You... who?" or "You... come... from... where?"

3. The "sex" element. I think it's extremely absurd to put the element into this movie in the way a human made out with a Na'vi woman. How come they did it exactly as human do? Kissing, hugging, etc. Moreover, it wasn't even Jake's real body: it's artificially controlled by him. Yet again, it's Hollywood, man! That's the way they've always done it. There's almost no Hollywood movie except with sex or nude scene in it.

4. Tail and Sa'helu of Na'vi. Why did it had tail and Sa'helu? What's the purpose of the tail other than to be stepped by another Na'vi? Also, the Sa'helu was alogical. Na'vi's head was covered by hair but it had Sa'helu by the end of its queue/ponytail? And it could even made Na'vi blind if it touched the eyes? "It's kinda creepy," Jake said.

Despite the flaws I mentioned, I still think the movie is spectacular. James was surely supported by consolidated geniuses. They worked very hard to make this film with sophisticated technology to bring CGI evolution to the extent that animated expressions were so realistic. I really loved the movie, and it was the best movie I've ever watched. Four thumbs up!

Trivia

1. To make this movie, James and friends spent about 10-15 years from research and brainstorming until the finishing touch to release it. Isn't that just insane? Luckily, James live long enough to finish the movie.
2. Avatars, like its riders, had five fingers and toes whereas the real Na'vi only had four.
3. Inspiration for the Na'vi people was from indigenious tribes, especially traditional African. It explained the familiar body paints and loinclothes, didn't it?
4. Even Na'vi's skin color was blue, their blood was red.
5. Average height of male Na'vi was 3 meters. It was as twice as male human height.
6. Their strength was three times than normal human strength.

And then there was only me!

Five of us started a subject together; one confronted the lecturer, and then there were four.
Four of us studied in the city campus library; one became lazy, and then there were three.
Three of us discussed on Net Present Value; one lost her shoe, and then there were two.
Two of us dealt with great uncertainty; one turned crazy, and then there was only me!

Girl in Pink

A short story by Faris

Walking down the street is her my eyes have been staring at. She is how I describe “elegant”, everyway a man could say, I'm convinced. Her way to walk, her way to laugh, her way to speak, and her way to take a glance, so clear even when I see her from distance. Well, I don’t know her name. I don’t even know nothing about her... just yet. I just know that she fonds of something feminine, explained by everyway she appears. Pink. It perfectly fits her prettiness. In the pink, she looks sparkling that my heart always feels her presence, even if she is hidden from my view.

Girl in pink that’s what I’ve been calling her in my mind! I want to know everything about her, everything she would want to share with me. And as the time goes, I want her to know everything about me as well, everything she would want to know about me. She loves to smile and laugh. Yeah, she is so cheerful. But still, I want to make her lips stretch wider than they usually do, until she forgets how to cry, or even just to feel a slightiest touch of sadness. I want to protect her from this harmful world -- even they've never stop calling me "weak fry" -- until she forgets how to be scared.

Girl in pink… how untouchable she is. Guys approach her, but none of them can get any closer than just a talk. So, could you tell me who are you waiting for, my Lady? Is that someone for you to share your happiness or your disappointment toward the world craziness? Is there none of them can do you those favors? Is that “right man” hasn’t yet to be appeared before your very eyes? Well, if that's the case, I would never have any idea who's that luckiest man going to be. But I know this for sure, I am not “that” man. Nope! Not yet! I am no one for you, I believe. I’m still looking for the perfection myself -- the so-called self-actualization -- even sometimes I think I might accomplish it by knowing you. But I can’t, I just can’t... Somehow my heart keeps saying that I would be the last man on earth that deserves you.

Girl in pink what is going on with me? Why am I feeling this way? I’ve never feel it before. So strange! I am surrounded by family and friends, but still am I feeling so lonely. And... what is this? My heart pounds faster and harder everytime I see her. I breathe harder everytime she talks with those men, as if I want to bury them into nothingness. Is this the meaning of “that” word? All this time I’ve been denying its existence, without even realized that someday I would have to feel it too. All this time I despise those couples flying in ecstasy, as suppose this world is theirs. Well, I would dare to lick my spit and swallow those thoughts if by doing so could bring her closer to the bottom of my heart.

Girl in pink... how unbearable this feeling, hurts my heart as if it's going to be bleeding. Ahhh... how I want to let you know that someday I would be "the right man" and gain the courage to yell the words out loud to this mere world: I LOVE YOU!

Globalization

Question: What is the truest definition of Globalization?

Answer: Princess Diana's death

Question: How come?

Answer: An English princess with an Egyptian boyfriend, crashes in a French tunnel, driving a German car with a Dutch engine, driven by a Belgian who was drunk on Scottish whisky, followed closely by Italian Paparazzi on Japanese motorcycles; treated by an American doctor, using Brazilian medicines.

PS: The idea behind this is not originally mine. I quoted it from my lecturer's pinboard ;-p

Well done! Yamaha YZR Paper Craft

Uhm... Actually, it's a bad time to share it, really. It's because I post it late by 2 months off!

I started it by 6th February and finished it by 17th February. But just because I was in a rush to went back to Medan the next two days, I hadn't had a time to post about this. Whatever it was, here I am, showing off the finished work of my Yamaha YZR paper craft model (white).

Is it cool? You tell me. But everytime I see it, I always think I could do it in a lot more better look. Well, it has a lot of weaknesses, but this one big weakness keep bothering me: the colour is ninety-nine-percent "white"! That's just because I was really excited to start it right away even before I found out the way to print picture in colours at my campus' computer.

How did I find out about this stuff? Please read my previous posting titled Paper craft.

So, this is it, my paper craft creation of Yamaha YZR and... enjoy!

Zombie

There is no doubt that most of gamers and movie-lovers around the world are familiar with it, but I bet less than half of them aware that the origin of the word "zombie" was derived from Kikongo (Congo's language) word zumbi which means god or divine entity. There are just too many zombie-related video games and movies. Among them, the most famous franchise is clearly Resident Evil (Biohazard in Japan), which was produced by Capcom and made its debut in 1996 as one of Sony PlayStation's earliest 3-D video games.

The history of zombie emergence is arguable even today. Most people doubt their very existence other than a mere Hollywood fiction, whereas some believed the traces are left in some part of Africa. So, long time ago, the West African believed that dead people could be revived by a sorcerer through voodoo power. These "undeads" were then controlled as laborers to work at farm or garden.

In 1937, Zora Hurston, an African-American author, found a case of a woman who had died and been buried yet appeared in a village in Haiti. She found out that the awakening of the dead woman was due to the use of some medical secrets. However, she was not able to finish her investigation as she could not find any further information.

In 1982, another investigation – again, in Haiti -- was done by Wade Davis, a Harvard ethnobotanist. He concluded that a living human can be turned into a zombie by using two special powders. The powders were coup de poudre (French for powder strike) and datura. By inserting these powders into the vein, a victim can be turned into a death-like state in which a shaman is able to control him/her. From his research, he wrote two books to explain this phenomenon, The Serpent and the Rainbow (1985) and Passage of Darkness: The Ethnobiology of the Haitian Zombie (1988). However, his works had been heavily criticized. Terence Hines, an expert in neurology, doubted Davis’ claim that the powders can induce the death-like state. He also stated that Davis’ reports of Haitian zombies is viewed as overly credulous.

The description and concept of zombie we know today are assumed to had been greatly influenced by George A. Romero's film Night of the Living Dead. In this 1960's film, he related zombie with vampire which resulted on a new hybrid of powerful yet messy monster with a never-satisfiable hunger on human flesh. He was inspired by Richard Matheson, the first author of the genre with his first novel I Am Legend (1954), which had been adapted several times by Hollywood producers.

Paper Craft

By the midnight of 6th January 2010, when I red Stella Lune's blog, I unintentionally found a posting written by a guest blogger Ninjatoes. Well, as far as I know, there were nothing special about him... until I found his hobby: paper-crafting!

What is paper craft? Well, Ninjatoes described it as:
"...when you print a page of parts (preferably on some thicker paper) cut them out and fold them, and then glue them together to make your very own 3D paper model of your favourite game/anime/movie character/whatever!"
Looking at his creations, I was astonished and started to wonder if I could also made such things. At a glance, I know that this hobby needs at least one thing, described plainly by one word: determination! Why's that so? Because it takes quite a time and also a lot of effort to cut papers -- which sometimes so small or difficult to cut -- and stick 'em up with a glue -- which sometimes too liquid and hard to deal with -- and finally assemble them up with right spots and angles to be united. Even if you are provided with the templates and detailed instructions, I can guarantee you that they are not as easy to be done as it may look.

Among Ninjatoes' creations
Also, Ninjatoes mentioned about a tool called Pepakura Designer. This tool enables you to import a digital 3D model and unfold it into a 2D template, obviously assisting this paper-crafting hobby in an even easier way and enjoyable to do.

Actually, paper craft is not wholly new stuff for me. I had been acquainted with them when I was still a child. I still remembered that there were some children magazine which provided these kinda stuff to play with. I also remembered that I tried to make one in vain, because it was real hard for a child, for God's sake!

Therefore, I started to find anything paper-crafted in the internet until I decided to have a try making Yamaha YZR model. I chose the white version because I just wanted to try to make it, not to make it as perfect as possible. Let's see if I can finish it at all!

Here are the sneak-peak for the work-in-progress parts:

Prologue

Hello and happy new year 2010 to all!

Herewith, I am delighted to join as one of millions of bloggers around the world!

This blog will take a role as a medium where I will share my thoughts, informations, news, short-stories, reviews, or anything that attracts my interest, which I hope attracts yours too. This blog will also be a medium in which enable me to enhance my English writing skills and vocabularies, and more importantly, my English skill itself.

So, the background on this blogging hobby of mine. My interest in blogging started to emerge when a guy motivated me to participate more actively in a club mailing-list back when I was doing bachelor degree. After a couple of postings, he humbly praised the way I write and thus recommended me to start creating a blog and stuffed it with whatever I want to write. Therefore, I started my first blog in a Friendster account. But then, I tried to find a better, more publicly-available blog provider, in which eventually I find Blogger as an attractive one. And then here I am....

Enough blabberings, enjoy the blog and feel free to leave comment or suggestion!
